When someone immediate starts throwing around blame after a catastrophe, it's usually because they've been informed that it's actually their own fault.

I just reviewed a review of a book full of reviews.

I also gave "The Anthropocene Reviewed" five stars. Highly recommend.

This podcast episode offers some good information about ICE raids and how you can be helpful. If you don't have the time to listen, check out this PDF for more info:

Y'all please, for the love of all that's whatever... VERIFY the things you pass on BEFORE you pass them on. Particularly the "ICE raids" that have been floating around. This is not necessarily a "better safe than sorry" situation, you're scaring the crap out of people for no reason and causing more chaos. It is the OPPOSITE of helpful.

WORD.

Yesterday, my kid came home with reports of ICE agents hanging out at bus stops to detain kids. I had a small panic attack and then sat down to work through the news reports with her.

To her credit, she was describing a real local CBS news story that her friends were circulating. However it was important to read the article. We do not currently have ICE agents stalking bus stops in Greater Boston. HOWEVER, the ICE threat is real and being taken seriously. The local school systems have examined their weak points and issued revised procedures. As part of that, there have been official statements issued that ICE agents will not be admitted onto school grounds without a warrant, and bus drivers who see suspected ICE agents at bus stops are not to let any kids off.

The governor of MA has announced that the state will work actively with ICE in the case of active criminal investigations. It's worded in a friendly way, but the point is that we will help ONLY if there is an active criminal investigation.

The reality is fucking scary, but it's still important to cross-check everything to get an idea of what's a real threat.

BTW: After getting on my soapbox about rage/fear-sharing, I feel uncomfortable posting this as its own post, even though it's a personal anecdote and not a share. I may try out reposting as a privacy-protected post. That's the whole point of being on Friendica to me, but the interaction goes down from a couple dozen to about 5 ppl.

in reply to Crys Wolf

OK, I have unfriended your incarnation from the Bluesky bridge. I'll have to unfollow you from my remotely controlled. Bluesky account. All this complexity is entirely my fault, but it's been fun to mess around with.

It's a new daaaaaaaaay. Is it? It is. Yep, I definitely slept.

Coffee's kickin' in. I don't think all my synapses are awake yet.

Okay kids, time for periodic advice from Aunt Crys.

Start working on a collection of things that bring you joy to turn to when things get overwhelming. Start a hobby, rewatch a favorite show or movie, join a book club... Something to focus on. We all need to reorient our perspective sometimes. There's more to life than the horrible stuff.

💖 Love y'all.

in reply to Crys Wolf

@Crys Wolf Hmmm. So, do you always post/cross post to Friendica? If so, I'll unfriend the other 2 instances of you in my contacts 😄
in reply to Susan Rati Lane

Lol yes, at least for the most part everything will be cross posted.

Experimenting with candle making. Today's test, finding out if I can turn incense into scented candles.

The good part is that if it fails miserably, I'll not have wasted too much time or energy and only a minimal amount of material.

Stay tuned.

in reply to Crys Wolf

Ftr, it did not work, but it did not explode. So there's that.

I am definitely officially tired of wearing wrist braces ALL THE TIME. But it's still cold, which is still making my joints angry, and I definitely intend to talk to my doctor about why carpal tunnel release surgery quite frankly barely did a damned thing.

I'm also rather tired of surgeries not feeling like they do a damned thing. And I also need to make an ENT appointment because my ear is clogged AGAIN and I should probably make absolutely certain (although I'm relatively confident) that the CSF leak isn't back (it probably isn't, but my sinuses clogging it up every single day is still a problem that merits addressing.)

in reply to Crys Wolf

Holy fuck. It may not be as scary as it sounds, but it sounds really alarming.

I've heard of something like that before -- a runny nose that never stopped having to do with leaking spinal fluid. So apparently it's a thing, and apparently it doesn't cause you to run out of spinal fluid or something horrific like that.

in reply to Susan Rati Lane

@Susan Rati Lane yep! Mine didn't go down into my nose but a CSF leak like the one I had could very easily do so. Apparently that's often how it gets diagnosed.

And I mean yeah, it was pretty unnerving if I'm being honest, lol. Left untreated it can actually cause the brain to start pushing down through the hole which'd be REAL bad. Luckily mine didn't get that far.

Funny thing is that I joked early on before my first ENT visit that I needed to make sure my brain wasn't trying to escape through my ear. Felt a little bit psychic when I found out that was actually kinda what the problem was. 😆

OMG I just listened to this video on This American Life and laugh/cried. My whole heart. youtube.com/watch?v=I0SZnTCx4N…

Kinda random: I think one of my favorite things in my life right now is hanging out with my niblings and talking about life experiences. My neice is all about getting life advice. 😆 I've already warned her that I have no real idea what I'm doing and most of the rest of the adultier adults don't either but I'm happy to share my experiences and shit I've learned the hard way.

She's sweet. She listens anyway. 💖 It's nice to be useful.

I feel weirdly subversive surfing the fediverse. Like I'm on the dark web or some shit, lol. I mean I know it's different.

But it also kind of feels like Bluesky is the user-friendly AOL version of fediverse social networking (I think? They're decentralized, aren't they? But... Yeah.)

Also also it's weird to me that so many people who were all about BBS waaaaaay back in the day are like "Nah, I'm done trying new Internet things" and have just camped out on Facebook. Facebook suuuuuuuuuuuuucks. It's sucked for sooooo loooooooooong.

So I'm here and I'm not even that tech savvy. I just have tech savvy friends who are kind enough to help me figure shit out. Who were also once BBSers.

Also tangentially connected there's a new clone of old school Geocities called Neocities? So my Internet life has officially come full circle (or will have, if I ultimately create a gaudy website on the platform. Which, let's be real, I'm probably gonna do.)

in reply to Susan Rati Lane

@Susan Rati Lane I actually never had an opportunity to use bulletin boards. My father did, and I heard a lot about them, but he wouldn't let me get online until they got AOL.
in reply to Crys Wolf

LOL. So you're a BBSer by association? Per and I are the bona fide real thing 😆.

Yeah, it really was only a few years when message boards were bound by telephone lines.

in reply to Crys Wolf

Raccoon worked? That's awesome! LOL. I commented from my test account, which is not linked to the bridge, so I can't see the comment on Friendica. I guess all comments are locked to logged-in accounts over there. 🙄

This is starting to really come together. I can't recall when I last felt positive excitement around social networking.

in reply to Susan Rati Lane

Yeah I'm kinda getting the hang of it I think. I really dig all the customization options on here too.
in reply to Susan Rati Lane

@Susan Rati Lane also bonus for Raccoon, cute little raccoon face icon on my home screen. It's the little things. ;)

in reply to Crys Wolf

It's actually a plugin on the Friendica side. Go to [Userpic]->Settings->Social Networks->Bluesky Import/Export to set it up. Then you can set it to post all your stuff both places by default if you want to, and your Bluesky feed will show up in your Friendica feed and be interactable.

I would recommend unpinning the "Discovery" Feed from your Bluesky account or you'll get all that crap here too.

in reply to Susan Rati Lane

@Susan Rati Lane
Oh yeah, I did the plugin setup. But I didn't set it up to post everything from here to Bluesky by default. If I do that and then post something friends only here, will it cross post or ignore it? If you know lol. I mean I could just test it.
in reply to Crys Wolf

When you post on Friendica, there's a tab for permissions. IF the post is public, there's a checkbox to post to Bluesky. I presume that the default setting will just auto-check that box, so nothing other than public posts would be cross-posted.

I have my posts set to default public, so I have to set the permissions if I want to be private. I think the default in Friendica is to automatically set posts to friend permissions. These privacy folks go to GREAT LENGTHS to make sure nobody accidentally makes a public post they intended to be private.

in reply to Crys Wolf

I don't see this tab in Fedliab 🤬. There's an eyeball button that allows you to set something regarding sensitive content, but I don't understand what it's doing. I'll have to look it up.
in reply to Crys Wolf

Under Account Settings->Security and Privacy, you can set your default post visibility to public.
